VW & Electric

Electric vehicles (EVs) for millions, not just millionaires — that’s the goal for Volkswagen Group as they aim to be carbon neutral across their fleet, production, and administration by 2050.1

When asked about the initiative, Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Operating Officer of the Volkswagen brand worldwide, says “Climate change is happening, and it’s time to do something about it…Volkswagen is pushing the pace of e-mobility for everyone.” To date, VW has already invested over $37 billion into their electric car program, more than any other auto manufacturer, and they aren’t showing any signs of stopping.2 Because at Volkswagen, the future is electric; and they’re leading the charge.

The ID Series

The entire VW EV series will go by the ID moniker, which stands for intelligent design, identity, and visionary technologies, and every ID will be equipped with an engine of the future, the new Molecular Electric Drive matrix (MEB), sporting lithium-ion batteries that allow for increased interior space.

In 2019, VW unveiled its first production model, the ID.3, based on the ID concept first shown at the Paris Motor Show in 2016, introducing the third major chapter in their history after the Beetle and Golf. Hence the 3 in ID.3 not only identifies the car as belonging to the compact segment category, an industry-standard, but also symbolizes the VW brand’s new direction.

Later that year, more announcements followed. The ID.4 and ID.Buzz were named as the two EVs in line for production after the ID.3. Below, you’ll find more about them and any other coming models or future concepts.

Production Begins

In June of 2020, VW completed the conversion of its manufacturing plant in Zwickau, Germany from combustion engine production to fully electric, though the plant had already started producing the ID.3 model back in November of 2019. Eventually, up to 330,000 electric models will be made there every year, the most of any plant in the Volkswagen Group. And in 2022, production of EVs in the US will begin at a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, all with the goal of producing 1.5 million EVs worldwide by 2025.5 Sales of the ID.3 will begin in Europe in the fall of 2020 (the ID.3 is not yet slated to be sold in the US). For American buyers, the all-new ID.4 is here!
